'Glaciers and Climate Change' Hike

Guided 'Glaciers and Climate Change' Hikes

Join Jaime in the summer of 2017 on a scenic day hike, where you'll learn about the dynamic history of glaciers in the Canadian Rockies, as well as what the current research predicts for the future.  This hike will follow a scenic trail, with opportunities and vistas along the way to learn about the way glaciers have created the local landscape.

Jaime conducted her PhD research on alpine hydrology in the Canadian Rockies and has the inside scoop on the latest research in the area.  She has worked as a consultant on several glacier mass balance projects in addition to spending time guiding folks on the trails and 'talking science'.

This year, these hikes will be offered at two locations to accommodate a range of schedules and abilities.

Wilcox Pass:  This is an 8 km hike (return) that rises high above the valley with a tremendous view of the Athabasca Glacier and Columbia Icefield.  This is a great choice if you have plans to be in the vicinity, and you would like to get some exercise while you learn about these majestic glaciers.  This is the shorter of the two hikes offered.

Meeting Place and time: 9:30am at Wilcox Pass Trailhead

2017 Dates: By request

Difficulty:  This is a moderate hike.  There is 335m (1000 ft) of elevation gain, so moderate fitness is required.

Cost: $100 CAD/person plus 5% GST.  Maximum 10 guests.

Iceline Trail:  This trail starts at the magnificent Takkakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park, and travels clockwise around the Iceline loop via Celeste Lake.  Along the way you'll be able to get up close to glaciers along the Iceline, and if the sky is clear we'll have views over to the Daly and Yoho Glaciers.

Meeting Place and time: 8:30am at Takkakkaw Falls, Yoho National Park

2017 Dates: By request

Difficulty:  This is an advanced hike, due to the length (17km) and the elevation gain of 710m (2340 ft).   The trip is a loop, so it is important that you have the stamina to complete the trip, therefore hiking experience and good fitness is required.

Cost: $100 CAD/person plus 5% GST.  Maximum 10 guests.

If you have any questions regarding which hike is most appropriate for you, please contact us.  We are happy to answer any questions you have and help you make the correct choice.

Note:  We are also able to offer 'glacier ice walks' to interested parties.  In 2017 we'll book these 'on request'.   You'll be fitted with appropriate glacier travel equipment, and be guided by an ACMG Mountain guide while Jaime fills you in on the science.  As this is a custom program, we can design the length of the day according to your wishes and itinerary.
