Lake O'Hara dreams...

Lake O'Hara is one of the most magical places to visit in the Canadian Rockies. It is hard to describe exactly what makes this place so special until you visit. It could be the many shades of blue and green you'll see in the lakes throughout the area, the amazing geological architecture (and colors!) or the amazingly built trails that have a rich history. The Lake O'Hara region has been portrayed in many paintings (the 'Group of Seven' painted here!), and for good reason - the scenery is second to none.

Parks Canada has kept this area pristine by limiting the amount of people that can visit. On any given day only a limited number of visitors are allowed (reserved months in advance) to ride the bus 11km up a gravel road to reach Lake O'Hara itself. Lake O'Hara is at 2000m, so the hiking trails begin right near treeline, making it easy to get great views and scenery from almost anywhere (no long trudges with the forest obscuring your views!). From the lake, many trails branch off taking visitors to places such as Lake Oesa, Lake MacArthur and the Opabin Plateau spreading out the visitors. As a result, it is not uncommon to find yourself in solitude on the trail, with just a few pikas and marmots for company!

If you are interested in getting away from the crowds at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, this is a great place to visit. There are trails in this area for all abilities.....gentle strolls with minimal elevation gain, to more ambitious trips such as a one day trip on the Alpine Circuit.

It is notoriously difficult to get a reservation at Lake O'Hara due to it's popularity. However, there are some reservations set aside each day for guided groups. If you are interested in visiting the area let us know and we can make a booking.
